About

A recent pilot project, led by Flexidao and Google, showcases the feasibility of hourly carbon-free energy accounting at scale. Leveraging the EnergyTag Granular Certificate Scheme Standard (Configuration 3), Flexidao successfully converted a global energy portfolio into hourly certificates. The project proves that corporate buyers can track, verify, and report electricity use at an hourly level today, across geographies, using existing infrastructure.

Key takeaways:

1

Flexidao converted over 10.5 TWh of energy from Google’s portfolio across 7 countries into validated hourly certificates, using real meter data tied to standard EACs.

2

Flexidao’s platform is EnergyTag-accredited and underwent independent audit, demonstrating the compliance and auditability of its hourly matching process and ensuring no double counting.

3

Granular data for hourly matching is proven to be widely available and with basic cleaning and validation, it can be applied across any asset or certificate system (PPAs, RECs, GoOs, I‑RECs), proving that the foundation for hourly energy accounting already exists globally.

4

This project represents a major milestone in validating hourly energy accounting at a global scale.

Next steps:

  1. Flexidao has developed a standardized clean energy contract term sheet to improve data availability and support future hourly certificate issuance across regions.
  2. The pilot shows that any corporate buyer with access to EACs and hourly production data can now convert purchases to hourly certificates, enhancing Scope 2 emissions disclosures and aligning with future 24/7 requirements.
