Webinar “The Missing Link: Long-Duration Energy Storage and the Future of Europe’s Energy Security”
Date: 2 June 2026
Time: 10:00 CEST
On 2 June at 10:00 CEST, Killian Daly is joining a group of experts exploring how long-duration energy storage can help strengthen Europe’s energy security in a variable system.
As Europe’s power system shifts towards high shares of wind and solar, prolonged periods of low renewable generation, known as Dunkelflaute events, are emerging as a critical challenge for energy security and system adequacy. These multi-day weather patterns expose growing questions around how Europe ensures reliable electricity supply in a net-zero energy system.
The discussion comes at a pivotal moment for EU energy policy, as the implementation of the Electricity Market Design (EMD) Reform, the review of the European Resource Adequacy Assessment (ERAA) methodology, and broader revisions to Europe’s energy security framework move forward in Brussels. Together, these processes will shape the future design of capacity mechanisms, flexibility markets, and long-term system planning.
Building on a joint industry and civil society letter published in January 2026 calling for a sequenced framework for long-duration energy storage (LDES), this webinar will focus on the practical policy and market mechanisms needed to deploy LDES at scale across Europe.
