Taiwan is Doing Leading Work on Hourly Matching and 24/7 CFE
Last week, Shailesh Telang, Annie Wong, and Killian Daly had a great trip to Taipei. We co-organized a workshop, “From T-RECs to 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy: Strengthening Taiwan’s Path to Net Zero and Global Competitiveness,” together with the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, hosted by the government Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) and T-REC Center (T-RECC).
The event brought together leaders from government, academia, and industry to discuss granular electricity accounting and hourly carbon matching.
We discussed how it can enhance transparency, accelerate renewable integration and storage, and align Taiwan’s clean-power system with evolving global frameworks such as the GHG Protocol, SBTi, and EU CBAM.
We were impressed by the depth of engagement and the strong technical foundation already in place – T-REC system and 3 million+ smart meters enable 15-minute data reporting, positioning the country as a regional leader for sub-hourly tracking and future 24/7 CFE markets.
TransitionZero‘s Alex Luta gave a super insightful presentation of their analysis of the benefits of 24/7 approaches to cost effective clean power integration in Taiwan. This is a first of a kind study which has sparked much discussion in Taiwan’s energy circles.
Taiwan is also planning one of the world’s most sophisticated future renewable power markets based on 15-minute green energy matching, to incentivise cost effective renewable integration.
We also held bilateral meetings with some of the Taiwan’s largest technology companies, are were amazed to see the progress and tools they are developing to enable hourly matching at scale.
A big thank-you to Yenhaw CHEN and the TIER team for their great collaboration, to BSMI and T-RECC for their support, and to all participants for their insightful contributions.
We’re excited to continue supporting Taiwan’s journey toward credible, competitive, and round-the-clock clean energy.
