Montel Energy Intensive Week

Killian Daly spoke at a Montel webinar on how energy-intensive industries can use Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). The session was part of Montel’s Energy Intensive Week, held in partnership with European Aluminium.

After the energy crises, the EU promoted PPAs as a key tool for giving industry stable, competitive power prices. Yet energy-intensive manufacturers are barely signing them. Most new deals go to data centres, and this year’s price spikes have pushed many buyers towards shorter contracts. The panel looked at why today’s PPA products fit heavy industry poorly and what would fix that, including hybrid PPAs that combine wind, solar and battery storage to better match how industry uses power.

Speakers

  • Killian Daly, Executive Director, EnergyTag: the barriers to industrial PPAs and the reforms that could remove them, including the role of hourly electricity accounting
  • Josephine Steppat, Montel Analytics: the commercial case for PPAs, fair-value pricing and the long-term price outlook
  • Nick Bitsios, Head of Brussels Office, Metlen Energy & Metals: what a solar PPA really does to an industrial consumer’s power bill
  • Moderator: Alina Trabattoni, Correspondent, Montel News
