China Trip: Advancing 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy & Granular Accounting

Last week, Shailesh Telang, Annie Wong, and Killian Daly were in China engaging with key players in the nation’s energy transition. The trip featured multiple high-level meetings with stakeholders from academia, industry, and electricity system and market operators.

On October 29, the team took part in the workshop “Tracking International Rules: 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy and Granular Electricity Accounting.” The event was hosted by TianGongLCA, an influential think tank affiliated with Tsinghua University, one of China’s leading institutions in sustainability research.

Our team delivered keynote presentations and joined panel discussions alongside a diverse audience of experts from industry, academia, and the national power sector, including participants who traveled from cities such as Beijing and Nanjing.

The conversations focused on how hourly carbon matching and granular electricity accounting can enhance transparency, accelerate renewable energy and battery adoption, and connect China’s evolving green power systems with global frameworks.

It was really great to see the deep understanding and progress stakeholders across the countries’ electricity sector are making to enable and benefit from hourly matching and renewable hybridisation.

Thanks to the many who attended and helped put this together!
